Since its humble beginnings in 1989, the Vendée Globe has captured the imagination of the world, providing a showcase for intrepid sailors and their exploits at sea. In this daring adventure, Zodiac became an invaluable partner for the first time in 2008, lending its support to this epic race. Let’s retrace the history of this emblematic collaboration, which has shaped the very essence of the Vendée Globe.
Zodiac, a tradition of excellence at sea
Since its creation in 1896, Zodiac has been intimately involved in some of the world’s greatest round-the-world adventures. From polar expeditions to ocean crossings, such as Alain Bombard’s in 1952, Zodiac boats have been chosen by the greatest explorers for their incomparable reliability and performance. This tradition of excellence has naturally led Zodiac to become involved in major sailing events that share the same values, including the Vendée Globe. Signing the partnership with the Vendée Globe 2024 is a great source of pride for Zodiac and its staff. It requires a commitment from all teams – marketing, design office, production, logistics, sales in order to provide 42 RIBs that will supervise and ensure the safety of the competitors.
Unwavering support for sailors
In 2008, Zodiac marked a turning point in the Vendée Globe by providing the organization for the first time with no fewer than 60 Zodiac Pro Open 650, representing the second generation of this boat with a new console and bolster. This contribution was crucial in ensuring the smooth running of the race, providing sailors with reliable, high-performance safety boats.
Four years later, in 2012, as IMOCA performance continued to evolve, Zodiac adapted its offering to meet changing needs. Although the Pro Open 650 remained a preferred choice with a new float decoration, the brand also made available larger boats such as the Pro 750, Pro 850 and N-ZO 700. This flexibility in Zodiac’s offering has provided sailors with a varied range of equipment to suit all weather conditions.
A promising future of collaboration
As the Vendée Globe continues to inspire generations of sailors and sailing enthusiasts, Zodiac remains committed to supporting this extraordinary adventure. Drawing on its expertise and heritage, the brand is ready to take on the challenges ahead, and to continue pushing back the boundaries of ocean exploration alongside the Vendée Globe sailors.
An adventure with many challenges
Over the years, Zodiac has enjoyed some memorable moments in the Vendée Globe, and has also met some challenging challenges. In 2008, the sales team had to transport 60 boats on trailers from the Zodiac factory in Rochefort to Les Sables d’Olonne, a challenge successfully met despite adverse weather conditions. It was during this edition that we organized the photoshoot of the Z with our boats, a great source of pride for our teams to have succeeded in this challenge, even though the weather conditions were not the best, with waves of 4 to 6m.
In 2012, the Vendée Globe organization provided us with a hangar to store the boats before the opening of the village and after the start.
This hangar had been unoccupied for a long time and had become the home of a large family of pigeons. The day after the boats arrived, we were unpleasantly surprised to find them covered in droppings. The Zodiac teams had to roll up their sleeves to clean all the boats.
